Coconut Oil for Dogs

Did you know that virgin coconut oil is not only good for people, but for dogs and other pets as well? It has helped furbabies who suffer from problematic skin issues including bumps & itching. It can be applied topically and/or even given as a treat.

People are reporting feeding it to tropical birds such as parrots and cats as well as dogs. Not only does it improve the appearance of the coat and skin, but when added to their food can also reduce pet odor. It works on bites, scratches, bumps when applied directly on the affected area to promote faster healing. Coconut oil can be given to cats to alleviate fur ball problems. Coconut oil is antibacterial, antiviral and antimicrobial.

Coconut oil is a natural way to rid your pet of ear mites. Gently apply warmed oil with a cotton ball once or twice a day being careful not to probe too deeply into the ear canal. You can use a dropper to apply oil directly into the ear to for greater penetration. Coconut oil has reported to be successful in killing mites.

It is imperative to purchase Certified Organic 100% Pure Virgin Coconut Oil. Most commercial grade coconut oils are made from copra. Copra is basically the dried meat of the coconut. If standard copra is used as a starting material, the unrefined coconut oil extracted from copra is not suitable for consumption and must be purified (refined). This is because the way most copra is dried is very unsanitary. Most copra is dried under the sun in the open air, whereby being exposed to insects and molds. The standard end product made from copra is RBD coconut oil (refined, bleached, and deodorized). Both high heat and chemicals (solvent extractions) are used in this method.

It is recommended to begin slowly, adding liquid or solid coconut oil to the food and gradually working up to about 1 teaspoon per 10 lbs. of body weight per day. It is recommended to start with 1/4 teaspoon per day for small dogs or puppies and 1 teaspoon per day for large dogs. If too much is given and your pet has not had the opportunity to adjust to the coconut oil, it can cause diarrhea while the body adjusts.

A lot of thought goes into planning meals for ourselves & our families, yet very little thought goes into what we feed our 4-legged family members. It’s a common misconception that because your vet recommends it, or because you are buying premium foods, that the food is nutritious, well-balanced, & good for your pet’s health. Sadly enough this is not the case. Furthering the problem are the ingredient labels which are extremely deceptive and don’t tell the true story. Here’s a comprehensive guide that will help you decipher these undesirable ingredients:

BYPRODUCTS - Animal (beef, chicken, meat, etc.) parts used in pet food that are unfit for human consumption & can include intestines, chicken heads, duck bills, chicken & turkey feet, feathers & bones. Beef, chicken & poultry byproducts are not required to include actual meat & can use 4-D animals (dead, diseased, disabled & decaying carcasses. Rendered meat (AKA tallow or meat meal) can be any mammal meat & can include euthanized dogs & cats.

FILLERS - inexpensive grains used as ingredients to bring down pet food cost. Examples of these are corn, corn gluten, wheat, brewer’s rice & soy. Dogs & cats are carnivores & should be given meat protein. At least one of the first three ingredients listed on your pet food package should be a protein derived from meat (unless a vegetarian diet is recommended).

ALLERGENS - Don’t assume fleas are the only source of all itching problems. Your pet’s diet may be the reason for the scratching. Corn, wheat, & soy are the most common allergens for pets, so look for foods with oats or rice as a carbohydrate for your pet’s food (NOT brewer’s rice, which is what’s left over from the mill after processing human rice & includes the floor sweepings).

PRESERVATIVES - used to keep food fresh. BEWARE of the preservatives ETHOXYQUIN (EQ), BHT, & BHA which have been DIRECTLY LINKED TO CAUSING CANCER IN PETS!

Our pets depend on us to feed them, so please read your pet food ingredient label carefully and make the right choice for them to live long, healthy, happy lives.
